Professor 塞曼 was born in Indonesia. During his youth his family moved to the Netherlands before coming to the United States. He lived and went to school in southern California. In college, he wanted to go into forestry but became fascinated with aquatic systems. As an undergraduate at UC Santa Barbara he conducted research on phytoplankton in sub-alpine lakes in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. He continued by studying phytoplankton in Lake Michigan for his M.S. at UW-Milwaukee, before turning to marine phytoplankton for his Ph.D. 在南卡罗来纳大学. He conducted postdoctoral studies at Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institution in Florida. Here he became engaged in studies of the Bering Sea and Arctic Ocean in collaborative work with scientists from across the US and the Soviet Union. This was followed by a stint as Director of an environmental education center in South Florida. Dr. 塞曼 joined the faculty at UNE in 1987 and continued phytoplankton research in the Bering Sea related to food webs.
